The route will be served by the “Volcán de Tijarafe” - a brand new, €72.5 million vessel from Naviera Armas able to carry 1000 passengers, 300 cars and 57 13-metre trailers. It will call at Portimao (southern Portugal), Funchal (Madeira), Tenerife and Las Palmas (Canary Islands).
The new service started on 15th June, and provides great benefits for shippers, islanders and tourists alike. With just 21 hours passage time between the mainland and Madeira, it is the ideal way of transporting passengers, perishables and vehicles in general, Navigomes says.

Luís Branco, managing-director of Navigomes, who coordinated the setting up of the service in Portugal, commented, “There is immense enthusiasm for this new service from the cargo and the tourism sectors, with the number of passengers and vehicles increasing steadily. The potential for passengers traveling between the islands, especially in summer, is huge, and this new direct link for ro-ro cargo between the archipelagos and mainland Portugal, opens a whole range of new opportunities”.
Navigomes has over 50 years experience in representing every type of transportation, and is one of the main vessel assistance agencies in Portugal, working in general cargo vessels, reefers, special cargo, and especially ro-ro, where it leads the market. It also specializes in transporting heavy or large cargoes, and is part of the Heavy Lift Group.
